Taika Seiyu Oyata

How his 10th Dan recognition came about

By Robert Teller

I was asked by one of my karate students how Taika Oyata was promoted to the rank of Judan,10th degree black belt.  First, you have to understand what it means to be a 10th degree in karate. The 10th degree in karate is a prestigious rank that signifies the highest level of mastery and commitment to the martial art.  It is typically conferred by the founder or top authority of the karate style or the National Karate Association.  This rank is reserved for the individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime of dedication, significant achievement, and a profound understanding of the art.  The 10th degree black belt is not only a symbol of personal growth and mastery, but also a recognition of the individuals contribution to the karate community and the martial arts philosophy.  When reflecting on Seiyu Oyata in Okinawa, he was usually introduced as sensei Oyata.  He was not always well liked by the older karate masters in Okinawa, but he was certainly respected as a excellent karate-ka.

In Okinawan karate, the term sensei is used to refer to a teacher or mentor, particularly in the context of karate training.  It signifies someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in karate and is respected for their knowledge and experience.  The term is used to address both teachers and students, and it reflects the importance of mentorship within the karate community.  Sensei plays a crucial role in guiding and instructing students to help to develop their skills and understanding of karate.

One day, I was visited by one of Taika Oyata‘s young black belts. The black belt had made a Judan certificate which he wanted all of Taika’s students to sign.  He thought, this would promote Taika to 10th degree.  I explained to him that it would not be appropriate for Taika’s students to promote him from within, but instead, such a high rank should be awarded from outside of his own association, benefiting his recognition as an accomplished karate master.  For instance, Shoshin Nagamine’s 10th degree came from the Okinawan Times Newspaper.  Instead of promoting Taika from within, I spoke with my wife, Miko Teller and Katsuko Lee, who were both officers in the New York and Washington Okinawan Cultural Society.  They were very receptive to the idea of promoting Taika Oyata to Judan. Taika Oyata has been very influential in the spreading of Okinawa karate and Okinawa culture throughout the world.  Taika Seiyu Oyata was promoted to Judan, 10th degree black belt from the US New York and Washington, Okinawan Cultural Society, and former Okinawan governor Mr. Matsuoka.  Matsuoka was the perfect person to help create a certificate for Taika’s promotion.  At the ceremony, my wife Miko read the certificate and presented it to Taika  Oyata.  I was proud and fortunate that my wife and I played a small part in Taika’s well deserved promotion to Judan, 10th degree black belt. (I miss my wife!)
